"Temple, a former Pittsburgh newspaper reporter who teaches journalism at West Virginia University, tells his story through the eyes of the deputy coroners who perform the initial investigation when a death is accidental or appears to be suspicious."
JP, one would wonder: Was the good professor a former employee at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review? Did you work with him? As I recall, he had a very good reputation as an intrepid reporter.
My time at the Trib overlapped with John's by about 6 months. When I was an intern, I helped out with a story he was working on. That was the extent of our collaboration. We are neither friends nor acquaintances. I informed the PG about that, but they did not think it was a conflict. I made the decision on my own to write the review without those details. And thanks.
I really don't know, and given that writers should always strive for specificity, it was perhaps on oversight on my part not to have included it. (In that case, it would have forced the issue, I suppose.) To be frank, I had a limited word count, and it consumed less space to say "a former Pittsburgh newspaper reporter" than "a former reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review." I also do reviews for the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle, and I'm usually limited to 400 words, so I have to be economical. Unfortunately, those reviews are not available online, or I'd post them as well.

Did the PG ask you to omit those details?

Oh, I should have added that you did a good review.

I didn't mean to imply that there was a conflict of interest. That didn't cross my mind.
Rather, I was puzzled that he was simply mentioned as a Pittsburgh newspaper reporter, without touching on the actual daily for which he wrote.
Is that a PG policy?
