Is Junior faking?

I don't think Junior's faking. But Tony getting killed in the first episode is akin to the castaways being rescued on the first show of Gilligan's Island. One thought out there online is that the show will continue on in flashbacks...to the season ending with Tony on the floor...just as tonight's episode concluded. I hope not. That's a little too Dallas for me. But The Sopranos always seems to lead you in one direction, only to knock you on your ass in another. Especially since tonight's opener seemed to indicate that everything was going along fine, despite all the uncertainty that season five's finale portended.

As for Junior's act, he was getting a little soft near the end of season five. Thank god there's only seven days until the next episode, instead of 21 months.

My money is on Tony surviving. The problem with the flashback scenario is that I understand an upcoming episode is about the wedding of Johnny Sack's daughter, but last night, Ginny brought him pictures from the shower.

On the other hand...some things need to be explained, like Christopher being a captain.

I'm pretty sure he survives. I read something about Tony defending Johnny crying at his kid's wedding (remember John's comment about not wanting to look weak wearing glasses at his trial?) But I do think we might be in for a lot of Tony flashbacks intercut with current scenes of everyone jockeying for position while his condition remains unresolved.

But I already love the symbolism going on...is Agent Harris losing his stomach for tracking down mobsters (the parasite business)? Is Carmela's house of cards (built of substandard wood) ready to collapse, since even she can't buy off the inspector? Overall, the whole mob scene is unraveling. John S. can't maintain Jenny's lifestyle while he's in prison. Carmela and Big Pussy's wife are friends again — and she's doing A-OK on her own. Christopher a captain? Well, did anyone really take Ralphie's place? And I'm curious why none of the characters commented on Vito's cozy relationship with Phil Leotardo. And what's up with Artie's food this year!

I'm in mob heaven. Oh, could you make out much of the William Burroughs poem in the intro? Something about 7 souls?

Anyway, Tony S. dead? God, I hope not.

My vote goes for Junior not faking it and Tony not dead...but it was long over due that some family member of his would really try to whack him.

I think we will definitely see some flashbacks, but I'm with Maria.

Vito took Ralph's place, and that was established last season. Remember when Christopher got into an argument with Vito, when he was busting his balls over the rumor about Tony and Adriana? Christopher threw a sandwich at him, and Vito said "I'm a captain now."

I do remember now. And it's long overdue that anyone would try to whack him...actually, wasn't the last time when Junior and Liv tried? And does it really count if Junior's flipped...mentally, that is?

Okay, Sopranos fans. If there's not usually enough foreshadowing in any given episode to require a second viewing, try this. That Wm. Burroughs tone poem during the intro seems to carry a lot more weight than taking about a person's seven souls (according to Egyptian mythology) and bringing us up to speed on the storylines. If you have Comcast on Demand, watch the beginning again, with close captioning. Each segment that discusses the individual souls refers to a character or plot element. For instance, Ray Curto's soul piece talks about the heart, which is often treacherous. And the millionaire gangster is shown during a segment that refers to a soul that is the second to depart and he is the second Mob person to die in the episode (the Boston bad debtor doesn't count). The guardian angel soul is discussed while Meadow dances for Fin...but I'll stop. So that you can watch again and make your own conclusions.
